Action On The Side is a collaborative filmmaking project, focused on skills development. We have been making short films since 2013 and have produced 29 shorts. Join us for short number 30!

The project is run by Patricia Hetherington, a freelance producer and trained lecturer in Film Production.

Who normally takes part?

Our main participants fall into these categories:

  • Filmmakers who want to try or learn a new role: try directing, AD'ing, sound recording, editing;
  • Filmmakers, Students, Graduates who want on set experience;
  • Writers who want their script to be made;
  • Filmmakers who want to build their network and make contacts;
  • People who just want to try filmmaking and see what it's like

Do I have to attend all weekends?

No. Some of the weekends are optional.

The Pitch Weekend and Production Weekend are most important to attend, and the screening at the end of the month.

What actually happens each weekend?

Let's break it down...

Weekend 0: Prepare

Do you have script or idea you want to pitch? Join us for a two-hour Script and Pitch Development to prepare your idea for the project, ready for the pitch.

Weekend 1: Pitch

Meet the group. The pitch of script ideas. The vote and selection of the film we're going to make for the month.

Script Development.

The Pitches to Direct. Role allocations.

Weekend 2: Preproduction

Bespoke work depending on the script: Rehearsals. Location Scouts and Recce. Art Department Planning. Camera Tests. Training on your role.

Weekend 3: Production

The SHOOT Weekend! The most important part of the project.

Weekend 4: Postproduction

The Edit. By the of the weekend, the film will be picture locked.

A bespoke training workshop for other project participants.

Weekend 5: Perfect

Finessing the edit: sound design, music, colour, titles, poster

Weekend 6: Picture!

Attend the world premiere of our short film. Invite your family and friends.

Weekend 7: Review

The optional final session is a 2-hour review of feedback on the film and the project.

Wasn't it previously only four weekends?

Yes. It's longer now because of Covid shooting guidelines.
