Interview with a Makeup Artist

In March 2021, Action On The Side ran a virtual Work Experience for Level 3 Media students. This article has been written as part of that, by Lina ES

I believe that makeup is an important aspect of filmmaking because they use makeup as a way to improve, enhance, or alter the appearance of the actors. One of the most important and impressive skills that a TV and film artist can do is be able to recreate the makeup so that the character's appearance is consistent despite if filming was done out-of-sequence. What I love about makeup is the fact that it allows me to visually express my personality and moods. I can change my look accordingly. Makeup has the power to transform a face and let the whole world know who you are.

I interviewed Makeup Artist Francesca Ioppolo. She studied SFX makeup in Italy before moving to London, where she has been based for over 10 years. She is highly experienced in the industry, with specialisations in special effects makeup, casualty, airbrushing and prosthetics. She has trained and worked in Italy, London, Cabo Verde, and Egypt. She believes "the most important part is the experience you get because it's a practical skill"

What inspired her to do makeup

I studied chemistry in high school as I wanted to have my own makeup company. One day I was speaking with my beautician about it and she offered to put me in contact with his best friend who was a makeup artist I visited him in his studio and when I saw all the mirrors with the lights I knew what I wanted to do. And since then it's been more than 20 years.

When she first knew she wanted to become a makeup artist

I always love the way the makeup artist makes the fake to be real. I watched Saw when i was only 5 years old and my mum was worried about the possibility of nightmares. She said that I replied “ mum don't worry, it's all ketchup”

Her experience of working in Egypt

It was a beautiful experience. I went twice. Basically the tour operator discovered that an high percentage of clients were women, so they decided to organise makeup lessons in the holiday resort

What motivates her to work as a special effects makeup artist

I love when people react badly to my makeup as they feel it's real. It makes me satisfied with my job.

What she believes the most important quality of a makeup artist is

We need to know how to behave on set and be always professional. Always be tidy and clean and have a sense of business
